[Bringing my travels up to date will take some time. For now I’m culling/organizing my photos and arranging chapters for future writings. As a result there is less narrative and more imagery. You may wish to view these posts with a quick perusal, a lingering glance, or as a stepping stone to your own travels. May they inspire you just the same.]
Vienna, like areas of Eastern Europe, had been home to my forebears. But I arrived, and would leave despite some effort, with that information and nothing more. I felt some connection to the past and yet completely detached from it.
Ironically, what made me feel most at home in Vienna was visiting Prater. It uncannely resembled Coney Island--minus the boardwalk and beachfront.
It not only felt familiar, but the joyous atmosphere was palpable.
There were however a few marked differences.

One couldn't miss the skinny tower and intrepid thrill-seekers swirling incredibly high above the park.
I opted for the much lower “children's" version.
It was high and thrilling enough for me, thank you very much.
And Vienna offered much more. Traveling by bicycle on the excellent network of paths was an added pleasure.
There was an array of splendid architecture and iconic masterpieces.
And a complex history that continues to resound today.
There were places for quiet respite.
And fascinating museums.
My short stay would include enjoying a local's favorite coffeehouse and apfelstrudel thanks to a chance encounter; attending a pop-up gallery opening; a visit to WUK, a massive cultural center once a locomotive factory, and a nighttime visit to its rooftop where Vienna revealed an entirely different beauty.
Next stop Slovakia.
to be continued…
